There is something I have observed repeatedly in enterprise technology: organisations invest in automation to save time, reduce manual effort and improve productivity, yet their employees continue to spend a surprising amount of time chasing approvals, correcting errors, reconciling data and working around the very systems that were supposed to make their lives easier. The technology is often doing exactly what it was designed to do. The problem is that nobody stopped to question the process itself. We have become very good at automating tasks. But have we become equally good at eliminating unnecessary work? I believe this is one of the most important questions organisations need to ask as they rethink their automation strategies.

Artificial intelligence has moved beyond answering questions, generating content and assisting with everyday tasks. We are entering a new phase in which AI systems can plan activities, use tools, coordinate workflows and take actions towards defined business objectives. This is the promise of Agentic AI. But amid the excitement surrounding autonomous agents and digital workforces, I believe enterprise leaders need to ask a more fundamental question: Are we using AI to transform how our businesses operate, or are we simply automating the inefficiencies we have tolerated for years? The distinction matters. It will determine whether Agentic AI becomes another technology investment or a genuine driver of business transformation.

Over the past few years, artificial intelligence in the enterprise space has transitioned through distinct evolutionary phases: from simple automation tools to conversational copilots that help users summarize documents or draft emails. However, enterprise operational leaders are quickly recognizing that copilots still require a human in the loop for every single click, workflow step, and transactional decision.
